The Big Preview – Weymouth

weymouth

It’s been announced today that the government are going to be supporting National League clubs with an emergency grant to help them kick off the new season this weekend, so it seems Stockport County’s new campaign will be getting underway after all. (Hooray!) Even though we can’t go and watch. (Boo!) We’ve already interviewed supporters of Maidenhead, Sutton, Bromley and Dagenham & Redbridge ahead of the new 2020-21 season, and we continue today by having a quick chat with the Chairman of The Terras Supporters Club, Pete Nash.

What are your thoughts on Stockport County?
Going to be honest with you all on this one, you will see right through any waffle! Never been to Stockport, so anything I said about the town I would have to find out from Google and I don’t think that is right, anyone can do that! What I will tell you is this, Stockport County is a proper football club, we understand your passion and we share the values. Weymouth supporters are just in awe that we are in the same league as such a famous club as yours, and that is the truth of it. You would probably be amazed at how many away fans we would bring if we were allowed, and I can assure you we would all have big smiles on our faces and probably a look of disbelief as well. We are so excited, it is just such a shame we play you so early in the season so look likely to miss out on visiting you.

Best moment of last season?
Had to be winning the play-off final, albeit on penalties. Never seen a keeper not make a save in a shootout but still keep a clean sheet! That has to be a first!

Worst moment of last season?
When the season was suspended. We were in good form. After our away defeat to Havant & Waterlooville in early February, we won three and drew two, cementing our play-off chances, with just the final positions to be decided.

Covid stopping the season early. Good or bad for your club?
A disaster! Missed out on watching two of the biggest games in the club’s history, including our first ever home play-off game. For good reasons of course with how COVID was affecting the world, but still terrible timing.

If restrictions have been lifted, what indoor places should County fans check out in Weymouth?
There’s lots of great pubs in town. The Black Dog, Golden Lion and on the quayside, the George Inn and the Ship Inn. In normal times, for overnight stays, there are always good shows on at the Pavilion Theatre and for music lovers, the live music scene is vibrant with The Golden Lion a stand out for me!

And if restrictions haven’t been lifted, how about outside places?
The harbourside is always a great place to visit, plenty of eateries and you can sit on the harbour wall and eat fish and chips from the famous Marlboro restaurant. The Nothe Fort and Gardens are beautiful all year round with great sea views and views of Portland Harbour and Port.

Which team do you most want to beat this season?
We have watched Yeovil for decades now go on and achieve success, culminating in a season in the Championship. It would be great to put one over on our old rivals. It has been a long, long time since we were in the same league!

Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?
If we manage to maintain our National League status, for most Terras fans, that would be enough, and a successful season. Just hate the fact we will have to watch it all on telly for the time being. Trying to turn us into sad and tragic Premier League fans, most of whom have no idea what the stadium their team plays in looks like in real life!

And here’s a few other bits and bobs we’ve added ourselves…..

Last time at County: It’ll be Weymouth fans’ first ever taste of Castle Street, the lucky buggers.

Last time at Weymouth: It’s our first ever visit to the Dorset seaside town. And we all like a little trip to the seaside, don’t we County fans…..

Where is Weymouth? Miles away. On the South Coast. A little bit over to the left from Bournemouth.

How do County fans get there, if they’re allowed? Cars. Coaches. Trains. However you want to get there, this could actually be a bit of a daft one. It’s in March, so we could be returning to watch County with a sunny seaside weekend away!

What’s the latest Weymouth news? (Well, the thing that came up most recently when we Googled ‘Weymouth’) Incredible pictures of dolphins swimming around Weymouth Bay have been taken. A drunk County fan will certainly try and ride one of those if we’re allowed to go down there in March.

When are County due to play Weymouth? A Halloween trip to Stockport for Weymouth, while we head to the South Coast in March.
