To be honest, we don’t know why we’re bothering doing a big preview to the new National League season, in which Stockport County have a realistic chance of ending their decade in the non-league wilderness, and returning to the Football League. It is meant to start on October 3rd. But that will probably be delayed until next February, or 2026 or something. Either that, or football will be completely cancelled, with results decided by online games of noughts and crosses. Until then, however, we crack on as normal. We’ve spoken to fans of all the teams County will be facing this season, and we’ll be publishing these every day in the run-up to the eagerly-anticipated 2020-21 campaign. Next up is John Parsons, a committee member with the Sutton United Supporters Club.
What are your thoughts on Stockport County?
I took the Supporters Club coach to Stockport for our first ever visit and all the supporters were impressed with the stewards, supporters and the staff in the club shop. All in all, a good day out on the coach!
Best moment of last season?
Drawing at home and away to both Notts County and yourselves. Plus beating Wrexham at home.
Worst moment of last season?
Losing at home to Ebbsfleet. Also drawing at home in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy to Billericay and Dagenham & Redbridge respectively, before losing to both in the replays.
Covid stopping the season early. Good or bad for your club?
I thought it was bad that we were unable to finish the season the right way, but I understand decisions had to be made, rightly or wrongly.
If restrictions have been lifted, what indoor places should County fans check out in Sutton?
The Gander pub on the A217, approximately 3 minutes walk from our club. Or there’s plenty of pubs and cafes on the High Street.
And if restrictions haven’t been lifted, how about outside places?
Can’t think of many as the club is in a residential area. But there’s a big park that backs onto the club. Depends on what time of year you visit.
Which team do you most want to beat this season?
Boreham Wood and Woking.
Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?
That’s a difficult one to answer, as it feels like it will be a completely different season than what we’re all used to. I feel sorry for your supporters who love the game like ours.
And here’s a few other bits and bobs we’ve added ourselves…..
Last time at County: 0-0 last season. Enough said.
Last time at Sutton: 0-0 last season. Enough said.
Where is Sutton? Saaaaaaaaaaf London. You mug.
How do County fans get there, if they’re allowed? The way every London away day with County should be done. An early train to Euston at around six in the morning with a crate of lager and a bottle of something horrible. Repeat on the journey home before ending up in the Bamboo.
What’s the latest Sutton news? (Well, the thing that came up most recently when we Googled ‘Sutton’) There’s a school in Sutton with a positive case of Coronavirus. Welcome to 2020.
When are County due to play Sutton? It’s the last home game at Edgeley Park before Christmas, before we head down to the capital on a Saturday in March.
