It’s been announced today that the government are going to be supporting National League clubs with an emergency grant to help them kick off the new season this weekend, so it seems Stockport County’s new campaign will be getting underway after all. (Hooray!) Even though we can’t go and watch. (Boo!) We’ve already interviewed supporters of Maidenhead, Sutton and Bromley ahead of the new 2020-21 season, and we continue today by having a quick chat with Dagenham & Redbridge fan Joel Page.
What are your thoughts on Stockport County?
I visited Stockport twice last year, spending a few hours in the local area on the day our October game was postponed, before doing the same journey a month later. On my initial visit the people were lovely and couldn’t do enough to compensate for the disappointment of the game being off. It left me with a really decent impression of the club.
Best moment of last season?
It has to be our late win at Aldershot in March. The game seemed symbolic of how much we improved under manager Daryl McMahon who we appointed in January. Besides that, there were precious few moments to savour, especially away from home.
Worst moment of last season?
Bromley away at the end of December was particularly bleak. The final stages of the game and its immediate aftermath were toxic and it proved to be the last game of the Peter Taylor era.
Covid stopping the season early. Good or bad for your club?
It was a forgettable season so not many were too disappointed to see it end, yet it did come at a time where we were getting progressively better every week. I’m confident we would’ve advanced three or four places had the season reached a natural conclusion, but it doesn’t matter really.
If restrictions have been lifted, what indoor places should County fans check out in Dagenham?
I can’t really think of much to do in Dagenham, it’s not exactly a tourist hotspot!
And if restrictions haven’t been lifted, how about outside places?
See my answer to your previous question!
Which team do you most want to beat this season?
Barnet probably. They took a lot of our players a couple of years ago so it was nice to return the favour this summer, and six points against them would be pleasing as well.
Realistically, how do you think you’ll do this season?
We’ve gambled this summer, especially in the current financial climate, to create a team capable of challenging for promotion. There are several sides who will be battling, though, so I’ll predict a finish of around 6th.
And here’s a few other bits and bobs we’ve added ourselves…..
Last time at County: A 90th minute winner from Nyal Bell in a 1-0 win last November. A few more of those this season will do nicely, Nyal.
Last time at Daggers: Bit of a mad one back in February. Liam McAlinden’s 89th minute goal cancelled out by the home side a minute later.
Where is Dagenham? Always feel like it’s Essex, but it’s actually East London.
How do County fans get there, if they’re allowed? A long coach journey with the egg butty brigade, and an old VHS of Only Fools & Horses. Or you could just get the train.
What’s the latest Dagenham news? (Well, the thing that came up most recently when we Googled ‘Dagenham’) An ABBA tribute act from Dagenham have seen all their bookings cancelled, so they’ve started going into care homes instead. Jesus, that’ll finish the old dears off.
When are County due to play Daggers? A Saturday afternoon trip to East London in November, with the Daggers heading up to Stockport in March.
