After losing at Torquay on Saturday, Stockport County picked up their first win of the new National League season last night, coming from a goal behind to beat FC Halifax Town 2-1. The Viaduct looks back on last night’s game by speaking to County fan Matt Stambach, and Halifax fan Alex Tepielow.
Yesterday’s match in one word:
Matt – Exciting.
Alex – Encouraging.
Matt – I was certainly hoping to see a reaction from the players after the last minute defeat at Torquay.
Alex – Hoping for a Town win.
Matt – Pleased with the win. Halifax looked a decent side that caused us some problems so all in all a good win.
Alex – Both teams looked strong and should finish near the top of the table.
Verdict on County:
Matt – I was very impressed with Jennings and Rooney’s link-up play. Maynard is a fantastic midfielder. Personally, I think we looked a little shaky at the back at times with Minihan being in an unnatural position. He played almost like an overlapping centre-back!
Alex – Played as expected for a team that’s invested heavily. Some nice football played and County should see off most teams in this league.
Verdict on Halifax:
Matt – I thought they played well. Summerfield in the middle (who I have seen playing for Macclesfield before and thought he was pants) played very well for them and could have got a couple of goals. Thought Jamie Allen up front was a handful too.
Alex – Big improvement from last season, and when we have our two injured strikers back we should be even more dangerous.
Best player on show:
Matt – Jennings or Maynard for us. Summerfield for them.
Alex – Summerfield for us, Hinchliffe for you.
Hopes for the rest of the season:
Matt – Promotion back to the Football League should be everyone’s hopes for this season. The squad is already strong and I expect Jim to strengthen further as the season progresses.
Alex – Top six finish, with a possibility of the top two. Same for County I’d say.
And here’s a few other bits and bobs…..
League table: County are up to 9th with their first win, Halifax drop to 7th with their first defeat. Still early days though.
Next up: Saturday sees County welcome Dover to Edgeley Park, with Halifax off to Boreham Wood.
Trivia: Halifax haven’t won at Edgeley Park since the 1989-90 season.
